May Day Tussie-Mussie

One of the most popular May Day traditions is to hang a basket of spring flowers on a neighbor’s doorknob. Homemade tussie-mussies filled with flowers are perfect for surprising neighbors, friends or teachers. This charming tradition of long ago is fun for all ages!

Materials:
Materials12 × 12″ scrapbook paper (one piece makes two tussie-mussies)
Ribbon, various coordinated colors and styles
Various trim (lace, beaded ribbon, glitter, stickers, etc.)

Tools:
ToolsScissors
Large ruler
Pencil
Hole punch
Glue
Scotch tape

Instructions:

  1. Using ruler and pencil, draw a diagonal line, corner to corner, on the back of a sheet of scrapbook paper. Cut in half, making two triangles of paper.

Draw lineCut in half

  1. Orient triangle so that longer side is “down,” then roll one of the bottom points up to the top point. Roll tightly, leaving no gap at the bottom, so that the points line up and the inside edge run straight from top to bottom. Glue into place. Continue to roll tightly, so bottom point remains closed and edges line up. Remain bottom point should line up with top point in the back. Glue into place.

Finish paper cone

  1. One idea for decorating a tussie-mussie is to decorate with ribbons glued along edges as desired. Using hole punch, make two holes directly across from each other, one on each side of the cone. Form a ribbon handle by tying each end of a length of ribbon through these holes. You may wish to add bows to each side.

  1. Continue to decorate tussy-mussy as desired. You may wish to glue down the ends of the bows, or add stickers or cut-outs from scrapbook paper. Here we cut a butterfly from the butterfly scrapbook paper, put a thin stream of glue around the edges of the butterfly shape, then shook glitter on it so that it would stick to the glue outline. Decorative options are limitless!

  1. Gather greenery and flowers from around your yard or purchase a bouquet at your local store, then fill tussie-mussie with greenery and flowers before presenting. Hang your finished tussie-mussie on a neighbor’s door and try not to get caught!

  • What pretty tussie mussies! That may be what I do for the girls at the office. Thanks!

  • Kellie, I’m having a bit of difficulty finding scrapbooking paper that is nice on both sides. I have only looked at Michael’s & JoAnn Fabrics. Do I need to get it from one of the home based businesses or is it available at a Scrapbooking store? Thanks!

  • I’ve had the same trouble, Sharon. I just discovered some “pads” of 12 x 12 scrapbook paper at Michaels that I hadn’t seen before. In the stores around here they are directly across from the individual scrapbook papers. The brand I used for the tussie mussies is by Tracy Porter. I would be happy to send you a picture, just send me an email!

  • This is a great idea and very helpful as I make my annual pilgrimmage across town tomorrow morning to leave May Day flowers for my sister. It’s kind of a “drive-by floral deposit” as I sneak up on her house at daybreak, tie the flowers to her front door, and then quietly drive away again. This year I’d like to make a paper cone like the one you’ve shared.

  • I so appreciate these directions! I just used these with our Keeper’s At Home club and it worked out really well. We used artificial flowers thinking that they would make a nice decoration. The girls used glitter glue and even put some on the edges of some flowers. We couldn’t find the double sided paper either so I used the regular scrapbook paper and it actually worked fine. The flowers covered up the inside. Thanks again!
