Old-Fashioned Popcorn
The Autumn Popcorn Mix recipe on page 8 of the Autumn 2007 issue of Seasonal Delights calls for 24 cups of popped popcorn. We ran out of room to include the popcorn recipe, so I will share it with you here!
You don’t need a popcorn maker or a microwave to make popcorn; a large pot and stove top works just fine!
Old-Fashioned Popcorn
Makes about 16 cups
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
½ cup popping corn
- Pour the oil into the bottom of a large pot (make sure it has a lid). Place the pot on a stove burner and set the burner to medium heat.
- Add three kernels of corn and cover with lid.
- When you hear the three kernels pop, remove lid and quickly add the remaining popcorn.
- Cover and shake the pot, holding the lid on as you do so. Continue shaking for two to four minutes. This is a great arm workout!
When the popping slows to about three to five seconds between pops, remove pot from burner.
- Be careful when removing the lid from the pot; the steam from the kernels will be hot. Pour popcorn into a large bowl.
You will need to make this recipe twice to get enough popped corn for the Autumn Popcorn Mix. This should leave you with eight extra cups of popcorn to turn into a yummy snack!
Here are some snack ideas for that extra popcorn:
Drizzle on two or three tablespoons of melted butter and sprinkle with salt for traditional hot buttered popcorn.
Add some finely grated cheddar or parmesan cheese for some cheese popcorn.
Do you have a sweet tooth? Sprinkle on a few tablespoons of cinnamon sugar mixture for cinnamon popcorn!
Serve while it is fresh and warm!

This is one example of the sort of bonus material we hope to provide throughout each quarter, along with more activities and other tidbits.
If there is demand for a PDF version, we can create one, but probably in addition to the blog posts, not instead of, because the PDF version may take a day or two longer. Let us know!

Taco seasoning also makes a good popcorn sprinkle.

This is how we always made it growing up. I now own a whirley pop same concept except you don’t have to shake just crank the handle.
I have always loved Parmesan cheese on my popcorn too!
Can’t wait to try the Autumn Popcorn mix.
Have a wonderful day

Lacey, I’ll have to try the taco seasoning next time!
Amy, a whirley pop sounds like a fun way to make popcorn!

This is the way we make popcorn too. Last Friday night, Chad and the oldest four children went to a ballgame…leaving the two youngest with me (too big of a crowd for us). Anyway, I told John (the 3yo) he could have a ‘popcorn picnic’ while they were gone. He and I popped the corn on the stove and put it in bowls, spread a blanket on the floor in the living room, selected a favorite movie, and had a great time!
He loves hearing the ‘pop’ as each kernel explodes in the pot…and it brings back wonderful memories from my childhood as well.
Thanks for sharing old fashioned pleasures! I LOVE it!
Hugs,
Amy

We found your magazine yesterday, through the Coffee, Tea, Books and Me blog, and printed it off last night. We used the quick print feature to save colored ink, and it used about 1/8 of a cartridge. Of course, I would have loved to print it in high quality, but this is still good. What a great magazine!
We made the Harvest Popcorn tonight and it was delicious. Thanks for the free subscription!
I have links to you posted on my blog…www.homeschoolblogger.com/teachermom. Hope your magazine is a huge success.

Yum- popcorn is one of my favorite foods!
We recently made it with olive oil instead of butter, a dash of salt and fresh parmesan cheese-really good (and healthy too!)

Viva La Old Fashioned Popcorn!

Hey there. I love the magazine. I was wondering what brand of popcorn you use. We have a popcorn popper with the dome that you can watch it pop. The kids love it. It’s like one I had as a kid. We used it the other night and it seemed like the popcorn was a little small. If anyone can tell me what brand is good I would really appreciate it.
Thanks!!!

I’m not sure I’ve ever had a bad batch of popcorn, no matter the brand, but I think the brand we used when whipping up these batches and the mix in the magazine was Orville Redenbacher’s.
Thanks!

I just found your magazine & I LOVE IT! May I ask what program you used for the layout and then conversion to the pdf format. I love the look and layout of your magazine. I’m the editor/publisher of our church newsletter. I use Microsoft Publisher. I also teach a class in basic computer skills.

mlonnevik, we used Apple’s Pages ‘08 for the layout, and it includes PDF output, as all Mac OS X programs do. I did run the PDF through a couple of utilities after that to squeeze it down as small as possible.
I also put together my first layout nearly twenty years ago, so there’s that!

This is how we ate popcord as kids! I completely forgot! We have grown sooooooooooooo lazy and rely on the microwave. However, it just doesn’t taste the same, does it?

We used to pop the corn in bacon grease!! I still do pop corn this way, but have switched to oil instead of the bacon grease. If your kernals seem small, or your corn doesn’t pop too well, maybe your corn is old. As it ages the corn loses moisture and doesn’t pop big and fluffy at all. Also, yellow corn pops bigger than white, and has a little more flavor, I think. I love popcorn!
